What's in a name?
School librarian? Media specialist? Information technology specialist? Job titles and descriptions will vary, but the profession is, at its core, devoted to working with teachers and students to positively impact teaching and learning. A wide array of responsibilities supports this central role. Among them:
- Managing the school's teaching, learning, and information center
- Collaborating with teachers to develop engaging units of study and lessons that integrate information literacy and technology skills
- Developing and organizing the collection of library resources—books, magazines, reference materials, and digital sources such as Web pages, databases, CDs, DVDs, etc.
- Helping students—and sometimes teachers—learn to find and evaluate appropriate sources from this wealth of materials
- Providing instruction and learning opportunities for students on computers and other electronic tools
- Promoting reading, writing, literacy, and independent learning
