Have you considered a career as a school librarian?

About us

"School Library Media Specialists for the Next Generation"

The master's program at the University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science is one of 56 programs accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). Our school media certification program is part of the University's Professional Education Unit, which is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). This website is part of a project funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), an independent federal agency and the primary source of federal support for the nation's libraries and museums.

Our project "School Library Media specialists for the Next Generation: Development of an Outcomes-Based Model for Recruitment and Education" has two goals:

Goal 1
To develop and analyze demographic "psychographic" profiles of students that include reasons leading to choice of school librarianship as a career path in order to inform recruitment efforts and development of appropriate public relations and advertising strategies.

Goal 2
To develop a model for outcomes-based assessment of students and outcomes-based evaluation for programs leading to certification of school librarians within the context of distance education delivery.

This Web site is one of the activities related to Goal 1. It is our hope that individuals who are considering school librarianship as a career path and those who are trying to recruit school library media specialist will find it useful.
