President's Message
by Helen Ivy, Librarian, Marine Resources Library, COC-NOAA-SCDNR, Charleston, SC

It seems that 2004 is racing ahead. I keep hoping that means spring will be here soon! The daffodils in full bloom in my yard say spring is just around the corner, but the wind, rain, and cold we are experiencing today suggest something different. Despite today’s dreariness, spring will arrive with all of its new life.

Speaking of new life, the SLA Board of Directors took actions at the 2004 Leadership Summit that will attract new members to SLA. The Board approved the creation of the new Archival and Preservation Caucus. Caucuses are informal groups within SLA for members who share a common interest not covered by any chapter, division, or committee. The Archival and Preservation Caucus will support information professionals who are interested in collection and maintenance of digital or paper-based materials.

In another action, the SLA Board approved the Model Governing Documents. The Chapter Governing Documents replaced the Chapter Bylaws on February 1, 2004. The SC/SLA Board is in the process of reviewing the Chapter Model Governing Document to determine if amendments are needed for our chapter. We will present our recommendations to the members at chapter meetings. So please stay tuned.

If you were not able to join us for the November meeting, you missed a treat. Julie Luppino, Marcia Burris, and the Ogletree Deakins Law Firm were gracious hosts. Cary Lafaye, librarian at Midlands Technical College, gave an informative and valuable presentation on the USA PATRIOT Act and its impact on South Carolina Libraries. The meeting was the setting for the first-ever Martha Zachert Scholarship Fund Silent Auction. The silent auction gave us a head start on our Christmas shopping and raised $400 for the Zachert Scholarship Fund. Everyone had so much fun with the silent auction that we hope it will become an annual tradition for the November meeting. Thank you to our hosts, our presenter, our program chair, and all attendees for making the meeting an outstanding success.

Nina has planned another outstanding meeting for us on March 5, 2004. Mepkin Abbey is a unique setting for the meeting, and our speaker, Jill Konieczko, is a former SC/SLA member. Jill is an excellent speaker and can provide us insight on getting published in library literature. In fact, Jill is one of the 2004 winners of the H.W. Wilson Company Award, the award that SLA presents to authors of outstanding articles published in Information Outlook®. Jill won the award for the article “Information Centers that Innovate” appearing in the January 2003 issue that she co-authored with Cynthia Powell. Congratulations Jill.

If you have not taken the time to review the new SLA web page, www.sla.org, please take a few minutes now. It has a neat new look. Be sure to check out the 2004 candidates for SLA officers, and cast your ballot. Find out the latest plans for the 2004 annual conference in Nashville, TN and make your reservations now. Read the brief on the future of libraries.

In November, I challenged each member to contact one prospective member. If it slipped your mind with busy holidays and hectic schedules, please take a minute to make a call or send an email to a colleague. Invite them to join us for our March meeting http://mrl.cofc.edu/slasc/winter2004/SLAwinter2004.html at Mepkin Abbey, and encourage them to join SLA and the South Carolina Chapter. Share with them the SLA member benefits and remind them that the organization values their expertise. Don’t forget to mention Chapter opportunities through May 2004: March 5th meeting at Mepkin Abbey; Regional networking dinners in late March; April 29, 2004 meeting in Columbia with Ethel M. Salonen, SLA President-elect.

Within the next few weeks, the Nominating Committee will begin recruiting officers for next year. Please consider serving the chapter. If your professional/personal obligations keep you from serving as an officer, please consider serving as a committee chair. For information on officer/committee chair responsibilities, please visit the SLA Leadership Center Web page. If you will volunteer to serve the chapter, please contact Helen Ivy by email (Ivyh@cofc.edu) or by phone at (843) 953-9370. Thank you in advance for your willingness to serve. If you have suggestions that will make the chapter more responsive to your needs, please share those with me. Working together, we can support each other as we grow professionally. I look forward to hearing from you.

Helen A. Ivy
SC-SLA President
