President's Message
by Nina Brunet, Library Manager, Criminal Justice Academy Library, Columbia, SC

Greetings and welcome to our 2004/05 Chapter year. I am pleased to announce we have a full complement of officers this year. Our past President, Helen Ivy, is our Advisor; Bob Williams is our President-Elect/Program Coordinator; Chris Billinsky is our Treasurer; Sherry Davis is our Secretary; and Joy Robinson and Geoff LoCicero are serving as our Directors. Their willingness to share their knowledge, skills, and talents with our Chapter is greatly appreciated.

Our Program Coordinator, Bob Williams, has some great programs planned this year. Anne Orange, our Employment Committee Chair, will be presenting at the September meeting. Her timely topic, "Interviews and Resumes: What do Applicants and Librarians Need to Know?" should be enlightening and helpful to us all. In November, we will hear a presentation from Ann Caputo of Factiva. Bob will keep us informed as plans are confirmed for our subsequent meetings.

Marsha Bishop, our Business Manager, has worked very hard this past year and over the summer to solicit sponsors for our meetings. She is booking sponsors for presentations at our meetings and we will have the opportunity to view products we may not otherwise have the chance to see. We are looking for someone willing to learn the ropes from Marsha this year and take over as Business Manager next Chapter year. Please contact her if you are interested. This is a great opportunity for someone to learn and then refine their skills next year.

Our November meeting will include our second annual silent auction to raise funds for the Martha Zachert Scholarship fund. Last year’s auction was such a fun time and financial success that members requested we make a tradition of it, and so we have. Members donated everything from homemade baked goods to art work, clothing, jewelry, and souvenirs from around the world. I personally did a great deal of Christmas shopping at this auction. So, be thinking of your contributions now to make a great success of this worthy fundraiser. Helen Ivy, our Advisor, will be heading up this project. Please contact Helen for details and suggestions for the auction.

In December, our Chapter plans to participate in support of the 48th Annual Military Librarians Workshop: “Military Libraries and Military Librarians: Evolving With the Speed of Change.” SCSLA members, Teri Newsome from the U.S. Army Chaplain Center & School Library (newsomet@usachcs.army.mil) and Gennie Arledge (newsomet@usachcs.army.mil), DoD Polygraph Institute Library, both at Fort Jackson, SC, invited us last year at our November meeting to attend.

One of our goals for this year is to promote writing for the profession. We will be actively soliciting your input to our own newsletter and posting professional writing opportunities. Please think about it and commit to put your thoughts and ideas on paper. Stephen Bajjaly (sbajjaly@gwm.sc.edu ) is editing and compiling the PIN this year and will appreciate any input you care to offer.

I am looking forward to seeing you at future meetings and am offering my sincerest wishes for a successful year.

Nina Brunet
SCSLA President
