Service Opportunities

Fall is here; the gradual changes in temperature and in the colors of the leaves bring to mind other changes. In SC/SLA there have been a number of changes since the election of officers in May 2003. Officers/committee chairs resigned positions due to illness, job moves, and increased responsibilities. Let me extend my heartfelt thanks to Nina Brunet who accepted to office of Vice-President Elect/Program Chair in late July, to Libby Wallace who accepted the position of Bulletin Editor in late August and to Bob Williams who has graciously agreed to serve as Membership Chair on an interim basis. If you would like to get involved in SC/SLA, the following opportunities are available:
Directors(2)
Government Relations Chair
Membership Chair
Networking Chair
Strategic Planning Chair

To learn more about these positions, visit the SLA Web page. Then let me know where you are willing to serve. Please email me at Ivyh@cofc.edu or give me a call at (843) 953-9370.

The South Atlantic Regional Conference (SARCIII) will provide other opportunities to get involved in SLA activities. We still need a South Carolina representative to serve on the Fund Raising Committee for SARCIII. Please contact me if you can serve. The SARCIII Steering Committee is finalizing the contract for the conference hotel and plans to convene committees by November 1, 2003. SARC III will be held September 28, - October 1, 2005 at the Colonial Williamsburg Lodge in Williamsburg, VA.

Programs

Nina Brunet has some exciting meetings planned for us this year. The topic of the November meeting in Greenville on Friday, November 14, 2003 will be the USA PATRIOT Act. See the meeting announcement for more detail. The February meeting is tentatively planned for Mepkin Abbey in Monks Corner. Ethel M. Salonen, SLA President-elect, will be our guest and our speaker for our final meeting on Friday, April 30, 2004 in Columbia. We will be arranging a few library visits for Ethel while she is in Columbia. If you would like to participate in this, please contact Nina Brunet (ninabrunet@scdps.net) or Helen Ivy (ivyh@cofc.edu). Finally, Nina and I would like to schedule regional dinners for March 2004; however, we will need some assistance since we don’t have a Networking Chair. Please contact us if you could assist with arrangements in your region. More details to follow later.

Silent Auction

Everywhere I turn it seems I see the effects of reduced budgets. That holds true for the SC/SLA Chapter as well. Chris Billinsky, treasurer, reports that she has not been able to make the $750 annual contribution to the Martha Zachert Scholarship Fund at the USC College of Library and Information Science for the past two years. The Board has voted to hold a silent auction at the November 14, 2003 meeting to raise money for the Martha Zachert Scholarship Fund. So think Christmas gifts and get a head start on your shopping. We are asking all attendees to bring an item for the auction—a handmade craft, an item unique to your city/county, an item you might like to receive as a gift. The donor will set the starting bid. Biding will be open throughout the day and close after the afternoon break. Winners will be announced at the close of the meeting. So bring your item for the auction and don’t forget to bring your “Christmas funds”.

SLA News

I wondered if the branding issue would be over after the membership voted in June to keep the name “Special Libraries Association”. However, the Association’s Brand Team is still hard at work bringing new meaning to SLA’s name and to the role of information professionals. Learn about the latest plans and initiatives on the Brand Team Web page and in Brand Talk, a regular column in Information Outlook®.

Candidates for the 2004 spring election are now listed on the SLA Web page.

In closing, please look at the opportunities for service available to you in SC/SLA. The Chapter needs your contributions and expertise. I’m looking forward to seeing you at the meeting in Greenville on November 14th. Don’t forget the Silent Auction.

Helen A. Ivy
SC-SLA President
