STUDENTS
The following are some of our Joint M.A./M.L.I.S. students and their activities:
Tracy Stephens Harter
Tracy came to USC all the way from Boise, Idaho where she worked at the Idaho State Historical Society. Here in Columbia she has worked as a graduate assistant at the South Caroliniana Library, as an archivist for the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free Masons of South Carolina, and for Modern Political Collections as Assistant Curator. She recently moved to Richmond, VA when her husband, fellow Joint Program student, Dale Harter, received a job with the Virginia State Library. Tracy is completing her work long distance and is presently working as an archivist at the Library of Virginia. Tracy is also doing preliminary work on a documentary edition of records related to Gabriel's Rebellion, a slave insurrection that took place in Virginia in 1800. She is also completing an internship with the Library of Virginia's Newspaper Project.
Cynthia Luckie
Cynthia a native of Macon, Georgia came to the Joint Program from Davidson College. During her first year Cynthia has been working as a graduate assistant for the Modern Political Collections archives. She has also participated in projects with the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
Rose Thomas
Rose received her undergraduate degree in History from USC. She returned as a mature student as a member of the Joint Program in 1994. Rose has worked in Davis College as a graduate assistant with Dr. Patricia Feehan. She has also completed an internship with the Historical Research Center in Sumter, South Carolina. As an intern Rose worked on arranging and describing collections of papers. She also performed preservation work as well as creating an index and database for the materials. Presently she is a graduate assistant with the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. Rose is involved with the Conservation Lab in helping make arrangements for the Department to move to its new building in the next year.
Shannon White
Shannon, a graduate of Auburn University, came to USC after working in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Archives. Presently she works as a Graduate Assistant for Dr. Robert Williams in the College of Library and Information Science and as a librarian for Carlisle Associates architectural and engineering firm in Columbia. She has worked as an Graduate Assistant at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, as an intern at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula in Montana, and on special projects at the South Caroliniana Library and the Earth Sciences Resource Institute.
Laird Whitmire
Laird began the Joint Program in 1994 and is winding up her last semester here on the Columbia campus before she begins work on her thesis on the South Carolinian, Mary Frasier, and her role in the development of libraries throughout the state. Laird is presently processing the papers of former South Carolina Governor, John West, for her Graduate Assistantship with the Modern Political Collections Archives. Laird has also worked on projects Dr. Robert Williams in the College of Library and Information Science. Her collaborative work on the History of Information Science in North America was published in the April issue of the Journal of the American Society for Information Science.
