Graduation and Commencement Exercises

GRADUATION

Application for Graduation must be completed and submitted to the SLIS Student Services Office by dates determined for eaach semester which are posted on listservs, on the current student website, and in Davis Collge..

Degree Application

A student enrolled in the final term of his or her program of study must apply to the University for graduation by the third week of the fall or spring semester or within the first 10 days of the first summer session, even if the student does not plan to take courses until the second summer session.  Notices of the deadline for graduation applications are posted on the SLIS student listserv, in Davis College and other locations on campus each semester.  I
t is the studentís responsibility to ensure that the Application for Degree or Certificate form is submitted before the deadline issued by the Graduate School.
The form is to be turned in to the Student Services Manager in Davis College.
The application for the degree shows the studentís name exactly as it will be printed on the diploma, gives the University a permanent address for the student and lists all courses which have not yet been completed but will be counted toward the degree.
If completion of the degree is delayed, the student must reapply for the degree in a subsequent term to be eligible for award of the diploma or certificate.

A late application (received in the Graduate School after the announced deadline for the term) will be considered as a submission for the following term unless the application is accompanied by a recommendation for exception from the Student Services Manager and a special processing fee of $25, which increases by $25 for each additional month after the deadline.  Contact the Student Services Manager immediately if you missed the deadline. Joint degree students should submit both applications simultaneously.
Diplomas cannot be awarded retroactively.  Remember that certifications by the State Department of Education, State Library, and other agencies are based upon the date the degree is awarded, not upon completion of course requirements.  Often, employment or promotion is contingent upon evidence that the degree has been awarded.

To pursue further graduate study after completion of a graduate degree, a student must submit a new application to the Graduate School, since the previous admission was for the specific degree program from which the student was graduated.

Commencement Exercises

All graduating students are expected to participate in commencement exercises. Student information is located on the University Registrar's HomePage under “Graduation Information” at the following link: http://registrar.sc.edu/html/graduation/
