Performance Standards

A student must complete all courses listed on the approved Program of Study with an average of at least B (GPA 3.0). The average on all courses numbered 700 and above must be B or better. All courses taken for graduate credit at USC within the time period for the degree, whether listed on the degree program or not, must average B or above.

If grades below B are earned on more than six (6) hours of work, or an F or U is earned in any course, the student's admission to the MLIS program will be cancelled; and, the student will not be allowed to enroll in any further SLIS courses for at least five years.  Students in the SLIS who earn grades below B on more than 6 hours of work or a grade of F or U in any course will not be allowed to continue in the program.

The SLIS standards for academic dismissal are defined in the paragraph above. Students who have accumulated credit hours at USC in addition to SLIS hours should be aware of the Graduate School "4-C Rule" which states that an accumulation of grades of C+ or below on 12 credits of graduate course work taken at the University within a 6 year period will disqualify a student for a graduate degree. This rule applies to courses taken for non-degree purposes as well as to courses taken in degree programs; it applies even to courses taken in two or more degree programs. A grade of U received in a pass/fail graded course is counted as a grade below B. Students who receive grades below B on 12 or more graduate credit hours are consequently suspended from degree candidacy status and are not permitted to enroll for further courses even as non-degree students without specific approval of their academic units and from the Graduate School. After a grade below C is six years old, it will cease to be a disqualifying factor.

USC Graduate School Academic Suspension Policay
Graduate students whose cumulative grade point average drops below 3.00(B) will be placed on academic probation and allowed one calendar year in which to to raise the grade point average to at least 3.00. Students who do not reach a cumulative 3.00 grade point avaerage during the grace period will not be permitted to enroll for further graduate work in that degree program.

Courses with grades below C may not be used for a graduate degree.  If a student earns a D in a required course, that course must be repeated until a grade of C or better is earned.  A deficient grade is a permanent grade and will be calculated in the grade point average.

At the beginning of each course students will be informed of the instructional objectives and the methods which will be used to determine grades for the course.  A course which is team taught will be graded collectively by the faculty teaching the course.  As in the case of a singularly taught course, the methods to be used to determine grades will be established at the beginning of the course.

Grades Used

The letter grades A (4.0), B (3.0), C (2.0), are used to denote excellent, good, and fair work in graduate courses, while D and F denote failing work.  B+ (3.5), C+ (2.5), and D+ (1.5) may also be recorded.  Grades of S (Satisfactory) and U (Unsatisfactory) are used for grading internships and specialist project preparation. A course completed with an S may be counted toward total credits earned.  A grade of W will be recorded  if a course is dropped during the free drop period (Consult the Master Schedule for specific dates based on the session assigned to course.), but will not affect grade point averages.  A grade of WF will be assigned if a course is dropped after the free drop date of the University.  This grade is treated as an F in determining grade point average. NR, no record, is assigned by the Registrar's Office if a grade has not been submitted at the proper time or if any grade not approved for a particular course has been submitted. NR is a temporary grade and must be replaced before the last week of the spring or fall semester following the term it was recorded. If not replaced, NR converts to an F. Grades earned on credits transferred from other universities do not count in the grade point average.  Special make-up work, extra work, or examination to change a grade already recorded is not permitted.

Grades of Incomplete

When extenuating circumstances prevent a student from completing some portion of the assigned work in a class, the student may receive a grade of I (Incomplete) at the discretion of the professor. The student should notify the professor without delay that extenuating circumstances have arisen and discuss the possibility of an I. The professor will determine, according to the nature of the interruption and the uncompleted requirements, what additional period of time will be allowed for completing the work before a permanent grade is assigned. Re-enrolling in a course will not make up an Incomplete grade.

After 12 months, an I which still has not been replaced with a letter grade is permanently converted to an F unless the professor assigned a back-up grade. This F will be recorded on the transcript, will calculate in the grade point average, and will make the student subject to dismissal.

Students should maintain close contact with their instructors when illness, personal problems, emergencies or verified disability prevent completion of assignments.  Faculty of the School pride themselves on being accessible and responsive to students' needs.  It is important to remember, however, that Incompletes are not to be used merely because coursework was not completed within the specified time period.
