Internships are open to students admitted as candidates for the Master of Library and Information Science, Certificate of Graduate Study in Library and Information Science and the Specialist in Library and Information Science degrees in the School of Library and Information Science.
In order to be eligible for an internship, the student must have successfully completed a substantial portion of course work, especially the required courses (SLIS 701, 707, 705) prior to the internship. The internship is designed to provide students with opportunities to demonstrate competencies acquired during their program and should be completed near the end of the student's program. Students doing internships are required to take relevant type of library or other information agency or type of specialization course either before or concurrently with the internship.
Students may take three or six hours of internship. Each credit hour requires forty-five contact hours of work in the internship setting. That is, three credit hours will be awarded for a minimum of 135 hours of internship work and satisfactory completion of objectives.
The grade for the internship will be either S for satisfactory or U for unsatisfactory completion of requirements for the internship. Evaluations for grades are objectives-based.
The School of Library and Information Science offers two types of internships (1) School Library Media Internship and (2) Library and Information Science Internship. Deadlines for the applications for both types of internships occur several months prior to the internship placement.
