1826 c. A subscription library existed in Greenville Village.
1865An active library society existed.
1897Neblett Free Library established.
1905Village Improvement Society (women) opened library in Fountain Inn.
1916Greenville County Library incorporated (dissolved in 1923).
1921Greenville Public Library established (dissolved in 1923).  Simultaneously, Phyllis Wheatly Branch was opened for blacks.
1922Greenville Public Library became tax supported (as public institution incorporation was unnecessary.)
1923Greenville Public Library became tax supported (as public institution incorporation was unnecessary.)
1924County mobile library service began, privately funded.
1925First rural bookmobile.
1926Green branch opened.
1927One mil county tax passed to support mobile library service.
1927County department of public (city) library organized, known as GreenvilleCounty Library.
1932"So Big" branch opened.
1940Library moved into own building.
1941Report showed library had 225 outlets.
1952McBee Avenue branch opened.
1961Greenville County Library established by an Act of Legislature.
1961Branches opened in Traveler's Rest and Mauldin.
1970New building dedicated.
