Charleston County Public Library System

Charleston is perhaps the home of America's first public Library. In 1698 an English clergyman, Reverend Thomas Bray founded a number of provincial libraries in the Colonies. Of all the libraries that Bray established at that time, only Charleston had support of public funds. Bray founded the provincial libraries so that all could have access to books, without restrictions.
