Libraries in Black high schools sometimes reached out to non-students. The libraries at Booker T.
Washington High and Finley High Schools exemplify shared school and community facilities. Faced with mostly segregated public libraries in cities, and relatively few separate branch libraries for outlaying areas, Blacks turned to local high schools for library access. This arrangement served admirably as both public and school libraries, as was the case of Booker T. Washington High School in Columbia and Finley High School in Chester. |
