Claflin College's Lee Library was built by the mechanical arts faculty and students at the school in 1898. The school was founded by the Methodists during Reconstruction. William Wilson Cooke, Claflin's superintendent of vocational training, designed the library building. He later served as the first Black senior architectural designer in the U.S. federal government.
