Evaluating Picture Books for Children with Disabilities

General Criteria

First of all, the material should meet the basic criteria for high quality children's literature.

Children may experience disabilities related to cognition, perception, vision, hearing and/or tactile kinesthetic skills.

A child with one or more of these disabilities may need adaptations in any or all of the following areas:

Illustrations.

Contrast between text and pictures and their backgrounds.

Content and presentation of stories.

Complexity and harmony of plot, characters, and illustrations.

Print font and paper quality.

Page layout.

The developmental level of the child must be considered. Some children with disabilities will be behind their age-mates on certain skills. Other children with disabilities may be more advanced than their age-mates on some skills.
