Ellen Shuler Hinrichs, a South Carolina native, grew up in Orangeburg.  She attended Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., where she discovered her interest in development and fundraising.

After graduation in 1997,Ellen moved to Thann, France where she spent a year as a nanny for an American family.  She returned to South Carolina and utilized her French skills further though work at a French company in Spartanburg, SC   

Ellen earned a MLIS from the School of Library and Information Science and worked for Scholastic Press. She also served as Assistant Director of Development for the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies before becoming the Executive Director of the South Carolina Center for Children's Books and Literacy.
