African American Leadership Group

Background:The African American Leadership Group at the School of Library and Information Science was established in the fall of 2004. The group is made up of highly successful African American library professionals from around the state of South Carolina . They have advised the School on issues relating to the recruitment, retention and advancement of African Americans in libraries across the state and on establishing a mentoring network for current students and beginning professionals. During fall 2006 and spring 2007, the group divided into two smaller committees to research and study existing diversity plans at other colleges and universities. After detailed study and discussion, the overall mission and two plans, the Student Diversity Plan and the Faculty/Staff Diversity Plan, were written and approved by the group. The plans were presented to the Faculty of the School of Library and Information Science in the fall of 2007 and were approved.
