Now that I’m admitted to the School of Library and Information Science, what do I do next?

Welcome to the School of Library and Information Science and the University of South Carolina. Below is a list of very important items that we strongly recommend you investigate as soon as possible.

Explore our website at www.libsci.sc.edu. You will find many useful links, especially under the Current Students tab and in the site index.

Sign onto the SLIS "listserv" - Every student must subscribe to one of the following SLIS Student Electronic Mailing Lists:

  • SLISINFO@listserv.sc.eduThis listserv has important announcements regarding graduate assistantships, part-time jobs, deadlines, upcoming events, etc.
  • USC-SLIS@listserv.sc.eduThis listserv has all of the same announcements but also serves as a forum for Library Science students to ask questions, discuss issues, and get to know each other. Some students find the amount of postings to be overwhelming at times. These students may want to subscribe to SLISINFO only.
  • To subscribe to a Student Electronic Mailing List:
    • Send an e-mail to listserv@listserv.sc.edu. Do not put any information in the name or subject lines.
    • In the body of the message, type: subscribe
listname (usc-slis or slisinfo) yourfirstname yourlastname
    • You should receive an automatic confirmation from the listserv software
    about your subscription.

Review the SLIS student handbook on the School’s website where we have attempted to answer the questions most asked of us. Please be sure to review the information regarding technology and computer requirements

Learn about our online Registration process via VIP. The VIP Intranet provides members of the USC community (students, faculty, staff, and alumni) secure, personal access to University data. You must have a valid USC ID number and PIN in order to login to VIP, but a demo is available. https://vip.sc.edu

NOTE: When registering for a “J” course offered by Distance Education, for example J701, you must use the 6-digit schedule code. The schedule codes are available on the Distance Education “Current Courses” page (see below). Click on the appropriate term (i.e. Fall 2008) then the course number (i.e. SLIS J701) for a description of the particular course and corresponding schedule codes.
http://www.sc.edu/uis/de/current_courses/index.html
You will not receive a tuition bill in the mail. All tuition and fee payments are processed through VIP. Your bill will be available on VIP after you complete the registration process.

Contact your advisor as soon as possible, before classes start if possible. After classes begin you will need to talk to your advisor to discuss your Program of Study. This document will be a part of a class assignment in SLIS J701, and an original must also be submitted to the Student Services Office in addition to the one submitted for the assignment.

If you ever have any questions, never hesitate to contact SLIS Student Services.

Alice Hartzog - Admissions and Placement coordinator
Linsey Newman - Students Services Administrative Assistant

Madonna Stoehr - SLIS Distance Education Coordinator
