Mandy Hawkins Awarded 2011-2012 SLIS Information Science Scholarship

     Bachelor of Science in Information Science major Mandy Hawkins is the recipient of the 2011-2012 SLIS Information Science Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student majoring in Information Science who has demonstrated academic excellence and has a justifiable financial need as determined by the School of Library and Information Science Undergraduate Committee.

Mandy is a sophomore from Clover, South Carolina. She was on both the President’s and Dean’s list during the last several semesters. She is also involved in the Reformed University Fellowship. She loves to read and says “One of my earliest memories is books being read to me. As a child I fell in love with reading and it became a vital part of my childhood. Since then my love for literature has grown. This is what fuels my career plan of becoming a librarian.”

Mandy is also a volunteer for a local public library. She says that “I want to help students to understand that research does not have to be a painful process, and that the information is out there, you just have to know how to find and access it.”

Mandy wants to finish her undergraduate degree and then she plans on earning her masters in Library and Information Science. She says that “I feel that I can really use the knowledge I have gained from getting a degree in Information Science and the experience of working in a public library to be an effective manager.” She adds that “I am excited to see where my education and career in Information Science will take me! The awarding of this scholarship means that I can continue to pursue my goals in Information Science. It is such an honor for me to receive this award and I am immensely thankful for it.”
