Women of the United Nations


Women have played a crucial role in the history of the United Nations. These women have been an encouraging force and represent a strength in which all women can be proud. This guide offers information associated with women and their influence in the United Nations. This guide has links only to other UN sites and does not include UN-affiliated Organizational web sites.


Commission on the Status of Women: Priority Theme-Equality: CSW plays a major role in the rights of women and holds special meetings concerning these and other important issues. Some of those issues covered are violence against women, the human rights of women, aging women and conduct. It also gives the medium term plan on women and development. It gives information on the plans for the 42 session Expert Group Meeting and also gives information on sessions preceeding the 42nd and has direct links to that which was covered in those meetings.

The Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women-Women 2000: Women and Decision-Making: This site offers information and provides links to more specific information about the Convention and the its aim to stop discrimination against women. CEDAW is an organization created to aid in the advancement of the status of women. This site gives detailed information on the roles CEDAW plays to ensure that this goal is carried out effectively.

DAW's Newsletter Women 2000: Women and Decision-Making: This Newsletter was created to highlight the acheivements and support the Division for the Advancement of Women. It is also a site which offers up-to-date information on notable events and materials which has to do with expert group meetings of United Nations organizations and their role in Women's issues.

Fact Sheet on Women and Decision-Making: This site offers interesting facts about women, for example the Percentage of those in Government positions as of 1996. It is also a link to other sites in which women may find interesting because they deal with women and their influential and active roles within today's society.

Publications-Advancement of Women: In Beijing 1995 at the Fourth World Conference on Women, the importance of women assuming positions of power and influence was stressed. This site shows the influences women are making today in the fields of technology and computer networking as well as leadership roles within their countries and communities. It also touches on "The United Nations and the Advancement of Women 1945-1995" and the "1994 World Survey on the Role of Women in Development."



The United Nations and the Status of Women: This site provides information on the System of Women's Status, The Committee of Discrimination Against Women, UN Action for Women, Commission on the Status of Women and Women in Development.

The United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women: This site offers News, CEDAW and Public information and gives a mission statement on what this organization is all about. It is a helpful index and gives up-to-date information on important issues related to the United Nations and to Women. Please also visit the Internet Information Resources Page which has information on CEDAW and information on how to access information at the FWCW and DAW databases.

The United Nation's International Women's Day: Since the first organized actions of working women to strike in New York's textile and garment factories in 1857, women have been making their rights known. Over Fifty-three years later in 1910, the Women's Socialist International decided to deem that day as International Women's Day. This site provides history related to this significant event and gives valuable information concerning the struggles of women and the influential roles they have held all throughout the world.

Women and the Economy: This site offers information on the roles women play in the international economy. It gives their points of view and actions taking place within different countries.

Women in Power and Decision-Making: This site gives detailed information concerning the greater equality for women in decision-making in which a variety of strategies have been introduced under the rubric "affirmative action" or "positive measures." The Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women goes into detail on what is considered to be discriminatory and not discriminatory. This site also addresses the International Development Conference in 1997, in which any type of affirmative action which took place within the Conference was the beginning of what is now possible for women.

Women Watch-Calendar of Events: This site offers information on the current information on events and happenings going on in Women's Committees within the United Nations. The event, committees involved, date and where the event or meeting will take place is given. The Calendar runs from the current month until the end of year.
