International Relief and Development Sites on the Internet


This Web Guide provides links to a wide range of resources and information relating to relief and development on a global scale. Topics include hunger and poverty, women and children, preparation for and relief from natural disasters and man-made emergencies, refugees, weather tracking and analysis, and economic development. The Guide is limited to international inter-governmental organizations (IGOs), although a brief list of non-governmental organization (NGO) Web sites is also included.

DHA-Online (United Nations Department of Humanitarian Affairs) - includes links to the full-text of DHA's latest emergency reports and publications, disaster reduction and emergency information by country or region, and coordination and emergency response efforts; provides information on humanitarian training, conferences, and workshops as well; DHA maps are also available online by country or region.

FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) - provides an overview of FAO's emergency activities and a map that pinpoints the countries where FAO responded to food and agricultural emergencies from January 1994 to June 1997; provides links to FAO's multiple roles in preparing and responding to disasters, its coordinating emergency activities, descriptions of the types of disasters it supports, and its partnerships with other organizations; includes a search engine.

FEWS (USAID Famine Early Warning System) - provides a wide range of information resources, from FEWS bulletins and special reports to in-depth articles and weather analysis on the countries of Africa; includes detailed information on El Niño, as well as links to other El Niño Web sites; contains a Youth Page for younger readers interested in FEWS and its activities.

GIEWS (Global Information and Early Warning System on Food and Agriculture) - contains links to the full-text of publications and reports, as well as to online databases and electronic mailing lists; a brochure on the GIEWS can also be downloaded as a PDF file using Acrobat Reader.

IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development) - (after a pilot implementation period to support the Conference on Hunger and Poverty held in Brussels in November 1995, IFAD's Web site is being reassessed); provides basic information about IFAD and its vision; includes information relating to the Conference on Hunger and Poverty and provides a listing of other Web sites dealing with hunger and poverty issues.

OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) - contains links to statistical information on a variety of topics in such areas as economics, health, public management, energy, agriculture, education, labor, and social affairs; includes links to OECD news and events, activities, and member countries; free documents are also available online at OECD, many of which require Acrobat Reader to view; includes a search engine.

ReliefWeb - includes links to the latest information on natural disasters and man-made emergencies taking place around the globe and of concern to the humanitarian community; provides a search engine for locating the full-text of 1997 documents, as well as one for searching the 1996 document archive; its Map Centre contains links to maps representing nearly every part of the world.

TCOR (Special Relief Operations Service) - includes information on funding sources, staff, operations officers, coordinators, and humanitarian emergency interventions; provides information on TCOR appeals made in 1995, 1996, and the first quarter of 1997.

UN (United Nations) - serves as a good starting point for finding information on a wide range of relief and development topics; includes links to several online databases, UN reform initiatives, conferences and events, and publications and sales; includes a search engine.

UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) - includes a link to UNCTAD events and meetings for 1997 and 1998, as well as information on the technical cooperation programs of the United Nations; contains links to the full-text of press releases, along with links to other publications available online or for sale through UNCTAD.

UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) - provides links to the full-text of UNDP's current and back issues of Flash!, UNDP publications and statistics, and in-depth information and updates on UNDP's areas of focus--Poverty, Environment, Gender, and Governance; includes a site map as well as links to UNDP Country Offices and Regional Bureaux.

UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) - provides an overview of the organization, its activities, strategies, and services; contains links to UNEP products, including publications, projects, speeches, database systems, and catalogs; the UN News link includes daily coverage of meetings, press briefings, factsheets and newsletters; provides a search engine.

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) - contains information on current events taking place throughout the world, including a UNESCO monthly events calendar; provides a link to Information Services covering 85 bibliographic, referral (directories, projects, etc.) and factual databases; includes statistical information from the 1996 edition of UNESCO's Statistical Yearbook, as well as from the Wall Chart on Basic Social Services for All.

UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) - provides an overview of the plight of refugees worldwide, including maps and statistical information; contains a link to photographic images depicting refugee life, as well as a link to first-hand accounts of refugees forced from their homeland; links to related issues, publications, and official UN documents are also included; unit and lesson plans for secondary school teachers are also available online in full-text.

UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) - includes information on the worldwide efforts of UNICEF, its research, activities, and methods of evaluation; provides statistical data on children and women, as well as information on the Convention on the Rights of the Child; publications are also available online in full-text; includes a search engine.

UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) - serves as the only worldwide organization dealing exclusively with industry from a development perspective; provides links to databases, business information, and news releases, as well as links to online press kits and sponsorship information; includes a search engine.

United Nations ACC Task Force (1997 Basic Social Services for All) - provides a Wall Chart of currently available national statistics in six key areas identified by the Task Force: population (with special emphasis on reproductive health and family planning services), primary health care, nutrition, basic education, drinking water and sanitation, and shelter. The Chart delineates where countries are presently and summarizes the key relevant goals agreed upon at the United Nations conferences.

VAM (WFP Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping) - providing startup support to WFP country offices, this Web site includes links to cartographic layer and map databases, cartographic data holdings by geographic area, reference documents, and up-to-date cartographic data on the affects of El Niño.

WFP (World Food Programme) - includes access to Executive Board documents, resources and appeals, field operations, reports and statistical information, press releases, and the WFP photo gallery and picture show.
