Many organizations and institutions are working to provide a great variety of information about and guidance to nonprofits online. This index offers a short annotated list of the many resources available. Several of the sites described here provide still additional links.

The Nonprofit Resource Center

The Nonprofit Resource Center calls itself a "one-stop directory for Internet resources of interest and value to nonprofit organizations." Its webpage offers links to legal, grant writing, staffing and volunteer management, fundraising, and advocacy resources.

Non-Profit Nuts & Bolts

This site, features an online magazine with articles on all aspects of organizing and managing a nonprofit organization.

Internet Nonprofit Center

The Internet Nonprofit Cener site offers a nonprofit locater that assists with clarifying the legal neame and location of any nonprofit registered with the IRS. In addition, there is a FAQ section with answers to questions about the organization and management of nonprofits, how they are regulated, and every aspect of financial development.

The Nonprofit Zone

The Nonprofit Zone provides media opportunities and other resources to nonprofit organizations. In addition to information about its media services, the Zone's website provides an "Answers" database with articles on a variety of issues confronting nonprofits.

MAP for Nonprofits

The Management Assistance Program (MAP) for Nonprofits offers classes and workshops for nonprofit leaders and board members. Its website contains a calendar and description of classes, a nonprofit newswire, and informtion about other services offered through MAP.

Nonprofit Charitable Organizations

This site, from About.com, provides links to a variety of websites offering assistance with everything from finding a job with a nonprofit to fundraising to public relations. In addition, the site offers forums on a variety of issues crucial to nonprofits.

Program on NonProfit Organizations

Yale University's Divinity School hosts a center for multidisciplinary studies of philanthopy, nonprofit organizations, and volunteerism. This website describes the center and upcoming workshops; offers descriptions of ongoing research projects; and links to some working papers produced by center participants.

Government Resources

NonProfit Gateway

This site provides links to government resources, regulations, and laws, affecting nonprofits. In addition, it provides a gateway to federal agency sites.

Tax Exempt Organizations - IRS

This IRS site links to publications explaining the requirements for tax exempt organizaitons, how to apply for tax-exempt status, annual filing requirements, and IRS rules and procedures. There is also a directory of IRS customer service locations and a packet of reproducible federal forms.

Special Topic Sites

Legal Information Institute

This page at the Cornell Legal Information Institute offers an overview of law governing nonprofit organizaitons, and linkes to statutes, regulations, and court decisions interpreting this body of law.

Nonprofit Career Network

This web site tries to assist both nonprofit organizations and individuals seeking emploment with them by providing a directory of nonprofit organizations, a calendar of job fairs highlighting positions with nonprofits, resumes of job seekers, and position announcements.

National Center for Nonprofit Boards

The website for this organization features notices of enrichment programs for members of nonprofit boards; an online bookstore offering works useful to board members; and a newsletter.

Benton's Best Practices Toolkit

This site offers "tools to help nonprofits make effective use of communications and information technologies". It features links to electronic newsletters, and discussion lists; hints for fundraising on the Internet; and news about services offered by technology companies and foundations.

Grants and Grant Writing

Grants Information Center

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Memorial Library has prepared and posted a collection of resources describing funding available for nonprofits. These include a bibliography of print resources, links to databases containing private and government grants, and news about seminars sponsored by the Grants Information Center.

The Foundation Center

This organization works to serve the information needs of both grantmakers and grantseekers. Its website hightlights a directory of foundations, a newletter, and an online library.

Getting Grants

This website offers tips, techniques, and books related to grant writing. It features a glossary of funding terms, funding news, a collection of links to other resources, and a bookstore.

Elements of a Grant Proposal

This site, provides a detailed outline and description of a basic grant proposal.

Basic Elements of Grant Writing

This site, sponsored by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, posts an easy guide to the basics of grant writing. It is organized into steps, with a list of tasks and examples at each step.

Grants Manual

This site features the full text of a handbook entitled grants and grant proposal writing.

GuideStar

GuideStar calls itself the "donor's guide to the charitable universe." It is a searchable database of more than 620,000 nonprofit organizations in the U.S.
