This guide is designed to provide an introduction to “green” or environmentally responsible investing; to offer links to organizations, publications and online portals that have a focus on eco-investing and sustainable business practices; and finally to highlight green investment opportunities as well as resources for further education.  The information provided here should by no means be considered investment advice and does not represent a recommendation to buy or sell stocks.

Portals

From Outside, a print and online magazine dedicated “to covering the people, sports and activities, politics, art, literature, and hardware of the outdoors,” an informative investment guide for beginners interested in “putting their money where the green is.”  Profiles mutual funds and stocks that are environmentally friendly, gives an overview of the hot sectors in green technology, and provides links to further resources on the subject.

Helping green businesses grow,” Sustainable Business.com is an internet community that culls the most compelling news, articles, and columns from over 35 leading sustainable business trade publications and individuals. Also includes a business connections section, green jobs, and a resource directory, and publishes Progressive Investor, a monthly newsletter that guides investors and advisors toward sustainable investments.

Touted as the internet’s “most comprehensive finance site devoted to socially responsible investing,” Social Funds provides complete coverage of social mutual funds, community investment, and shareowner action. The site also provides daily news and investment advice,and offers financial services guides, directories and resources.

Organizations

Ceres is a “national network of investors, environmental organizations and other public interest groups working with companies and investors to address sustainability challenges such as global climate change.”  Web site provides news on corporate reporting of environmental performance and corporate and investor action on environmental sustainablility; and links to publications and reports.


This nonprofit membership organization works “to harness economic power—the strength of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace—to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society.”  Web site provides a wealth of information on green business and social investing, tips for socially responsible financial planning.

SIF is a “a national nonprofit membership organization promoting the concept, practice and growth of Socially Responsible Investing (SRI).”  The SIF web site offers comprehensive information, including a thorough guide on how SRI works, and contacts and resources on socially responsible investing.  A major component of SRI is environmental responsibility and green screening.

Publications

This print and online magazine advocates “responsibility from the supermarket to the stock market” and encourages and promotes the awareness of socially & environmentally responsible business, investing and consumer resources.  Articles and content focus on green investing and socially responsible investment strategies. 

A monthly magazine covering the impact of environmental issues on the lending, insurance, investment and trading decisions affecting industry.  Issues include news and analysis on a broad range of environmental issues including weather risk management, renewable energy certificates, emissions markets and "green" investments.

Co-op America’s bimonthly newsletter “bringing green living, purchasing, and investing tips right to your door.” An excellent source for extensive resources on living and investing in an environmentally responsible manner.
