European Union Map Resources on the Web

This page is designed to give a basic introduction to the various types of European map resources that are available on the web. Examples will come from various types of European government agencies. Most of these sites have English versions, however some do not.

      European Mapping Sites

      • Resource: CERCO The National Mapping Agencies of Europe

        • Description: Listing of the International Mapping of Europe. The unifying body that represents most of the mapping agencies of Europe. Includes a listing of all European participating members including those within the European Union.

      • Resource: MEGRIN Web site

        • Description: Contains information dealing with the digital and spatial data of more than twenty European Countries. According to them their main goal is to helps users of geographic information by simplifying access to NMAs digital map data. As Europe becomes more closely linked, organisations need to be able to monitor their activities using reliable and comparable map data.

      • Resource: European Union Member States and Maps.

        • Description: A listing of the European Union members and basic maps of individual countries.

        AUSTRIA
      • Resource: Bundesamt für Eich und Vermessungswesen - (BEV)

        • Description: This is a listing from CERCO as this web site is currently being updated. This is Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying which is the main federal mapping agency for Austria.

        BELGIUM
      • Resource: Institut Géographique National - Belgique - (IGN-B)

        • Description: This site is the National Geographical Institute - Belgium. It contains information both in French and in German about the Institute. There are listings for products including topographic, thematic and aerial photographs. Also included is the Institute's mission and contact numbers.

        DENMARK
      • Resource: Kort & Matrikelstyrelsen - (KMS)

        • Description: This is the web site for the National Survey and Cadastre - Denmark. It contains information in English, Danish and German. The information is broken down into, the map shop, geo data shop, Research and Development, Facts about Denmark, and about KMS. Of particular interest is the online ordering system the 1:850,000 and the 1:1,200,000 digital map.

        FINLAND
      • Resource: Maanmittauslaitos - (MML)

        • Description: This is the web site of the National Survey of Finland. It contains information in English and Finnish. Contains a map site for both professional and personal use, an annual land survey, and satellite photos.

        FRANCE
      • Resource: Institut Géographique National - France - (IGN-F)

        • Description: This is the web site of the National Geographic Institute of France. The information is in French only. Contains information on mapping, aerial photographs, history and e-mail contact messages. Of particular interest is the online aerial photograph searching system the use of Global Positioning Systems and the electronic resources available on from IGN.

        GERMANY
      • Resource: Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie - (BKG)

        • Description: This is the web site for Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy. The information is in English and German. The initial page is in English and the rest is in German. Of particular interest is the Antarctic Maps, topographic maps, geodetic reserach, and geoinformation. Also there is a search system and an address listing.

        GREECE
      • Resource: Hellenic Military Geographical Service - (HMGS)

        • Description: This is a listing from CERCO as there is no web site for this agency. This brief overview deals with what the Hellenic Military Geographical Service does.

        IRELAND
      • Resource: Ordnance Survey Ireland

        • Description: This web site is to Ireland's national mapping agency. Information is in English. It contains information on how to order maps, aerial photographs, and digital mapping. Custom mapping by something called PLACE (Planning, Legal, Agricultural, Construction, and Engineering Maps) is included.

        ITALY
      • Resource: Istituto Geografico Militare Italiano - (IGM)

        • Description: This is the web site to the ITALIAN MILITARY GEOGRAPHIC INSTITUT . This site is in English and Italian. It contains information on IGM digital data, map costs, and project lists for 1997.

        LUXEMBOURG
      • Resource: Administration du Cadastre et de la Topographie - (Cadastre)

        • Description: This is the government web site dealing with maps and mapping for Luxembourg. This contains information in French. There is information on projects, and types of maps available through this department. Interesting organizational chart of what department does what.

        THE NETHERLANDS
      • Resource: Topografische Dienst Nederland - (TDN)

        • Description: This is the English version of the Netherlands Topographic Service. Information is in English and Dutch. Extensive list of digital products and demostration files available. Examples of the topographic map collection and special projects are included. A brief listing of available old maps is also included.

        PORTUGAL
      • Resource: Instituto Português de Cartografia e Cadastro - (IPCC)

        • Description: This is the web site for the Portuguese Institute of Cartography and Cadastre. The information is in English and Portuguese. Contains links to available digital and paper mapping options. Also, there are links to a museum and map library. Finally there is a link to their magazine.

        SPAIN
      • Resource: Centro Nacional de Información Geográfica - (CNIG)

        • Description: This is the web page to the National Geographic Information Centre of Spain. Information is in Spanish only. Of interest is a list of services and cost, a list of available products, and address book of contact persons.

        SWEDEN
      • Resource: Lantmäteriverket-(NLS)

        • Description: This web site is the National Survey of Sweden. The information is in Swedish and English. Very detailed site. Lots of use of frames which may slow down access time. All text for the English version of the site. More detail included in the Swedish version.

        UNITED KINGDOM
      • Resource: Ordnance Survey

        • Description: This web site is the Ordnance Survey web site to all of the United Kingdom. Of interest is the Interactive National Grid which is a finding aid to maps. Detail information dealing with computerized maps and paper maps are also available. Links to the Ordnance Survey doing consulting, managing, and custom mapping are included.
