United States government web sites

"Most environmental problems already have solutions. Humanity has accumulated a vast fund of environmental knowledge, information and experience over the last decades. Our task, then, is to locate the relevant information and make it available."
Wo Yen Lee, Director, INFOTERRA (1984-93) Copied from theUNEP web site

United States Environmental Web Sites
Council on Environmental Quality(CEQ)
This agency is a part of the United States Executive Office. The site includes the latest news statements from the President and the Vice-President; news archives; environmental legislation, reports, treaties, and policies; NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) information and regulations; guidance for writing environmental impact statements; environmental justice information; links to other NEPA web sites; links to environmentally-related government web sites.
U.S. Department of Agriculture
For topics and publications about land use, water quality, and conservation, browse this site.
This site includes information on plants, soils, watersheds, water and climate, the Natural Resources Inventory of state resources, and the 1996 Farm Bill Conservation Provisions.
Includes information about forest health, forest management, fire, minerals, geology, water, air, and wildlife.
ITIS is a partnership of U.S., Canadian, and Mexican agencies, other organizations, and taxonomic specialists cooperating on the development of an on-line, scientifically credible, list of biological names focusing on the biota of North America. ITIS is also a participating member of Species 2000, an international project indexing the world's known species. Despite the fact this site is a work in progress and some errors exist, this site still received a great review.
Department of Energy Environmental Sciences Division
Topics include: global change research; atmospheric science; climate predictions; ecosystem research; oceans; terrestrial carbon; bioremediation, and microbial genome
This site includes hyperlinks to bibliographies, hydrology-related databases, GIS databases, government web sites and more. This is a highly recommended web site for surface water hydrology especially.
U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI)
This is a good starting point for the federal government’s environmental resources. Bureaus in the DOI include the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, USGS, Bureau of Land Management, and the National Park Service. The Secretary of the Interior is Bruce Babbitt.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
The EPA homepage provides links to publications, laws and regulations, and offices, labs, and regions
According to the EPA, more than a dozen major statutes or laws form the legal basis for the programs of the EPA, and this site lists them all in detail. For regulations, including new and proposed regulations, see the EPA homepage section Laws and Regulations.
According to the AED web site, this lab is responsible for marine, coastal, and estuarine water quality research. The mission of the Atlantic Ecology Division is to better understand and quantify the environmental effects of anthropogenic stressors on the coastal waters and watershed of the Atlantic seaboard
According to the ERD, this Athens, Georgia lab conducts research on organic and inorganic chemicals, greenhouse gas biogeochemical cycles, and land use perturbations that create direct and indirect, chemical and non-chemical stressor exposures and potential risks to humans and ecosystems.
According to the EPA, this is the EPA’s new one-stop source of data and information on environmental quality, status and trends. Resources include environmental profiles for each state, county and territory; a Digital library of environmental quality; and custom maps from the Environmental Atlas.
Researchers will find the sections within About the NEP useful, such as Cookbook of Innovations in Coastal Protection and Management Approaches. The NEP is designed to encourage local communities to manage and to protect local estuaries. The NEP combines representatives from federal, state and local government agencies as well as members of the community, such as citizens, business leaders, educators, and researchers. The EPA funds grants for the NEP projects.
Includes legislation and research on wetlands, oceans, estuaries, coasts, and watersheds, and data on monitoring water quality, such as polluted run-off and total maximum daily load data.
Includes information about groundwater and drinking water; wastewater management; laws and regulations; and "Water Topics" about such subjects as fish consumption advisories, and nonpoint source pollution control
United States Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS)
The FWS's mission: "To conserve, protect, and enhance fish and wildlife and their habitats." Interesting sites include the Wetlands Interactive Mapper, which maps the wetlands in your neighborhood, and the Library link that provides bibliographies for Classic Conservation Titles and online publications. Information is also available on legislation, endangered species, refuges, and fisheries.
United States Geological Survey (USGS)
Subjects include weather; biology, water, and geology topics; and satellite images. Earthshots, which are Landsat images from 1972 to the present, include articles and images about agriculture, cities, deserts, disasters, forests, geology, water, and wildlife. It is best to choose a particular Landsat article to browse the images. Another great source on the USGS homepage, which will direct you to other government web sites based on your research topic, is Need help determining what you need? Also, see USGS Databases, which are located in Internet Resources.
According to USGS this site is the world’s largest archive of earth science data and the official National Satellite Land Remote Sensing Data Archive. The EDC distributes satellite images, aerial photographs, and digital maps of the land surfaces. Specialized maps can be requested from the archives of the Global Land Information System (GLIS), which are located under Products and Services.
Topics and links to Proceedings of the South Florida Restoration Science Forum for Participatory USGS Projects; wildlife and wetland ecology; sustainable agriculture; nutrients; coastal ecosystems; landscape synthesis ecological modeling; hydrology, exotic species; mercury pollution
National Park Services (NPS)
The major topics are air, biology, geology, and water. These sites include air quality; wildlife and plants fact sheets about pest management, biological diversity, and exotic species; geological resources; water resources; and disturbed land restoration and techniques.
This site includes state maps; state lists; species lists of animals and plants and delisted species; habitat conservation plans
Additional links about endangered species can be found here.
A bibliography to online journals and field guides.
Provides the state lists and the law enforcing wild and scenic rivers.
NOAA – National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:
Topics include atmospheric science, space science, earth science, ocean science, he National Hurricane Center, and the latest news and issues. The NOAA Libraries is also a very useful collection of sites. If you are searching for a particular topic, searching within the individual NOAA agencies is more productive than performing a search from the NOAA homepage.
An extensive index of topics and subtopics. An ideal way to search the NOAA web sites.
