This guide is designed to help elementary teachers and students locate government web sites that may be used throughout the elementary curriculum.
Social Studies
The National Park Service home page provides information about the history and natural resources of individual parks. The Tools for Teaching section contains study guides, curricula, and other tools for the classroom teacher or student. Individual National Park links are provided from the home page. The Park System includes National Monuments, National Parks, Historical Sites, Battlefields, Preserves, and other designations. A few of my favorite National Parks are: Denali, The Grand Canyon, and The Great Smoky Mountains.The
United States Department of Justice has a page just for kids. The Justice for Youth and Kids page has links to the court system, civil rights information, drug safety, and more! Learn about the Judicial Branch of government.Learn about the Legislative Branch of government by visiting the
Senate and the House of Representatives. Take a virtual tour of the United States Capitol and see where our laws are written.Visit the
President of the United States and tour his home, the White House. This site provides information about President Clinton as well as all of the past Presidents of the USA.Science
NASA for Kids has links to other NASA sites about planets, airplanes, stars, and space travel. Spacelink contains educational resources and services for teachers.The
National Zoo is the perfect place to start when learning about mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. This site contains research, photos, virtual tours, and webcam shots of some zoo animals. A section on plants found at the zoo is also included.What's up with the weather? Visit the
National Weather Service to see the latest weather forecast and to learn about different types of weather. Educational resources are provided for students as well as for educators.Math
Visit the
United States Mint for information about how coins are made. Kids have a special section called Hip Pocket Change. Here, students can play games, make change, and learn about money. Teachers may visit the Teachers' Lounge for lesson plans and project ideas.Music
The
Smithsonian Institution provides links for many subject areas. Its Musical History site provides students and teachers with sound clips of American music recordings, artist information, and musical instrument articles.
