Emergency Preparedness and Response

This guide is intended to provide government information related disaster and emergency preparedness and response.  Topics included under Federal Sites are emergency management, weather and natural disasters, chemical and waste management, and disease control.  The state government sites are intended to connect users with the emergency management agency in their states.

Emergency Management

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)  Primary agency for the protection of the nation's infrastructure from hazards, including severe weather.  Works to reduce loss of life and property.

U.S. Department of Agriculture-Disaster Management and Coordination Coordinates emergency planning and response with FEMA and all other Federal departments having emergency responsibilities.

Farm Service Agency Offers emergency loans to farmers who have suffered losses and setbacks from natural disasters.

Food and Nutrition Homepage for the Emergency Food Assistance Program, offering disaster food assistance and food distribution.  Also hosts and section of frequently asked questions related to food assistance during disaster situations.
 
 

Weather/Natural Disasters

National Weather Service (NWS) Issues warning for severe weather, including hurricanes, tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, etc.

National Hurricane Center (NHC) Provides forecasts, satellite imagery, and general information related to hurricanes and cyclones.

Storm Prediction Center Monitors severe weather, thunderstorms, tornadoes, winter storms, winds, and rains.

Stormwatch Site from FEMA offering advice on preparing for severe weather and cleaning up after a natural disaster.

National Severe Storms Laboratory Offers general, scientific, and educational information on all aspects of severe weather.

Integrated Flood Observing and Warning System Part of the National Weather Services that focuses on flooding.  Offers warnings and rainfall data.
 
 

Chemical Emergencies and Waste Management

Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) Deals with solid waste problems for national, state, and tribal governments as part of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Superfund Locates, investigates, and cleans up the worst hazardous waste sites in the United States as part of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Toxic Release Inventory From the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT), a source for information about toxic chemicals being used, manufactured, transported, or released.

Oil Spill Program Program from the EPA for preventing and responding to oil spills.

Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR) Dedicated to the prevention of exposure and adverse effects associated with exposure to hazardous substances.

HazDat Scientific and administrative database to provide access to information on the release of hazardous substances and from emergency events.

Chemical Emergency Preparedness and Prevention Office The office of the Environmental Protection Agency deals with prevention and risk management planning, emergency response, and counter terrorism measures related to chemical emergencies.
 
 

Disease Control

Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Works to prevent widespread disease during times of disaster, but also promotes health by controlling disease, injury and disability.

National Center for Infectious Diseases Dedicated to the prevention of illness and death from infectious disease in the United States and around the world.  Responds to epidemics and threats of bio-terrorism.
