Working with the Nation's underserved, fully trained health professionals will receive a maximum of $25,000 per year towards repayment of educational loans if they serve at an eligible site. Clinicians will also receive a competitive salary, tax relief benefits and the chance to make a difference. Program excepts: physicians (family medicine, general pediatrics, general internal medicine, general psychiatry or obstetrics/gynecology), primary care nurse practitioners, primary care physicians assistants, certified nurse-midwifes, dentists, dental hygienists and mental health professionals. Two-year commitment required.
The Indian Health Service Two year contracts with priority given to nurses, nurse practitioners, mental health professionals and physicians. Up to $20,000 per year awarded plus the LRP will pay an additional 20% annually to the IRS to offset the increased tax liability incurred by participant. Program available to those eligible to practice in an approved IHS or other Indian Health Program priority site.
The National Institute of Health The NIH sponsors Loan Repayment Programs in AIDS, Clinical and General Research as well as a General Research Fellowship for qualified physicians, nurses, and scientists. Appointments vary from 2-3 years and pay a maximum of $35,000 per year towards educational loans.

NON-GOVERNMENTAL PROGRAMS:
American Academy of Family PhysiciansProgram available to first and second-year family practice residents. Will provide funds to participants to pay 75% of the interest that accrues on their loans while they are in residency and in their first year of practice. Available to those pursuing careers in rural practice, inner-city practice and full-time family medicine teaching. $10,000 maximum over a four year period.
AAMC and American Board of Family PracticeAvailable to third and fourth year allopathic medical students with demonstrated financial need and commitment to family practice. Pays a maximum of $50,000 ($10,000 per year for five years) towards educational loans. Contact information available.

MILITARY PROGRAMS:
US Air Force Available to medical school graduates enrolled in Air Force approved medical and specialty programs. Assistance includes full scholarships with living expense stipends and grants of approximately $18,700 for every year of participation. Active duty service obligations vary in length after completion of intern and resident programs. Residencies and fellowships are also available.
US Army Medical CorpsSpecial Incentive and Pay Programs (scholarships, grants and tuition assistance) available to physicians specializing in qualified programs. Includes programs for active-duty, reservists and those seeking commission in the Medical Corps. Active duty service obligations and loan repayment amount vary in length.
US Army Medical EducationHealth Professions Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP): Established to obtain and recruit active duty health professionals in designated health care shortage areas. Available to fully qualified health care professionals, full-time students in final year of a program or trainees in approved specialty graduate programs. Provides $22,000 annually for up to four years to repay qualified health care educational loans. Requires participants to enlist for active duty for up to four years.
US Army National GuardThe Army National Guard will pay up to $10,000 on qualified existing loans. Program does not specify undergraduate, graduate or health related educational loans or active duty service obligations. Contact information provided.
US Army ReserveProgram available to commissioned officers in the Medical Corps or Army Nurse Corps. After one year of satisfactory service, members are able to receive up to $3,000 per year in educational loan repayments, not exceeding $20,000.
US Navy: Armed Forces Health Professionals Scholarship ProgramNaval scholarship support available to those undergoing training in medical, dentistry, optometry and osteopathy fields. Program includes monthly stipend and financial assistance through annual grants of approximately $21,580. Active duty services obligations vary in length. KentuckyEstablish Practice Grant Program: Enables primary care physicians beginning practices in designated critical needs areas up to $10,000 per year ($40,000 total) in loan repayment.
MinnesotaLoan forgiveness and repayment programs available to certified health care providers, residents and students in various programs of study. Dollar amounts vary from $3,000 to $35,000, and year's service from one to three years. Contact information available.
New YorkThe Regents Physician Loan Forgiveness Program: 80 awards available annually to residents of New York willing to serve in designated areas where there is a physician shortage. Recipients receive up to $10,000 per year towards educational loans for a maximum of four years. Scholarship opportunities available also.
North CarolinaRural Practice Incentive Program: Available to primary care providers with educational loans. Pays $50,000 -$100,000 depending on years committed and qualifications. Tax stipend and bonus plans available.
OhioOhio Physician Loan Repayment Program (OPLRP): Primary care physicians in family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics and OB/GYN receive a maximum amount of $80,000 ($20,000 per year) towards medical school loans. Participants must practice 40 hours per week in designated health professional shortage areas and treat a percentage of Medicare and Medicaid patients.
OregonNursing Loan Forgiveness Program: Available to Oregon residents enrolled at least part-time in an approved program. Participants must serve for one year in a designated critical shortage area for every year educational loans were received. Other scholarship opportunities available. Application dates on site are outdated, please contact offices for current deadlines.
PennsylvaniaThe Primary Health Care Practitioners Loan Repayment Program: Participants will be assigned to a designated Health Professional Shortage Area. Minimum three year contracts in allopathic or osteopathic medicine with repayment amounts varying from $6,000 - $22,000 educational loans depending on skill levels.
South DakotaPhysician Tuition Reimbursement Program: Provides qualified family physicians up to $71,000 in tuition reimbursement funds. Participants must practice in an eligible rural community and be licensed in South Dakota. Must serve under a consecutive three-year contract. Mid-level, State and National programs also available.
TennesseeHealth Access Incentive Program: Grants available to physicians and mid-level practitioners. Minimum services contract of three years in an underserved area. Grants may be used to repay educational loans or to start-up a practice. Grant amounts vary. Loan repayment programs also available with maximum repayment amount of $50,000 for service in qualified areas.
Texas
Physician Education Loan Repayment Program of Texas: Repays educational loans for qualified physicians who practice in approved critical needs sites. Must be licensed to practice in Texas and serve a contract of at least 12 consecutive months/40 hours per week. Maximum amount $9,000 annually. Participants may also apply for a matching federal state loan repayment program for additional funds with additional year of service.
- Dental Education Loan Repayment Program: Must have license to practice in Texas in either general or pediatric dentistry n an approved dental care health professionals shortage area. Must serve contract of 12 consecutive months/40 hours per week. Available only to those who received undergraduate or professional training in Texas. Maximum loan repayment amount $10,000.
UtahRural Physicians and Physician Assistants Education Loan Repayment Program: Qualified physicians and physician assistants may receive a maximum of $73,200 towards repayment of educational loans for working in a designated rural area. Must be eligible for license in Utah and commit a minimum of two years. Direct link to site unavailable. Washington StateState Health Professional Loan Repayment Program: Available to licensed primary care health professionals. $25,000 per year maximum towards educational loans awarded to those serving in designated health care shortage areas in Washington State. Possibility of increase for extended contracts. Need not be a Washington resident to apply.
