Croft State Park:
A Guide to its Problems and Past

This guide will introduce the user to documentation and information pertaining to Camp Croft Army Training Facility, Croft State Park, and the Department of Defense’s (DOD) efforts to rid the area of hazardous munitions.

Croft State Park is located in 6 miles south of Spartanburg in Spartanburg County.  It is the second largest state park in South Carolina, comprising 7,054 acres of mostly wooded terrain.  The park is part of a tract of 19,000 acres of land known as Camp Croft, and was used by the U.S. Army during World War II as a training facility.  After the transfer of land from the government to state and individual control, a significant amount of artillery and other military relics were unearthed over the next several decades.  As a result, the government completed a survey and cleanup of the area to make it a safer recreational and residential location.
