"In 1940 the War Department bought a 22,000 acre tract between SC 56 and SC 176 southeast of the city of Spartanburg for the basic training of infantry troops. In February 1941 the United States Army activated Camp Croft, named for South Carolina-born Major General Edward Croft. Eighteen to twenty thousand men were trained at the facility every three months. At the end of the war, the War Department decided not to make the camp a permanent military base. The Spartanburg County Foundation bought it for more than $1 million in March 1945; the foundation had the authority to dispose of the property in any way it wished, with proceeds to benefit the county."
