SERIES TITLE: Topographical Quadrangle Maps

ORIGINATING AGENCY/DEPT.: Dept. of the Interior

FREQUENCY: Irregular

YEARS PUBLISHED: 1888-

DESCRIPTION: Topographical maps are graphic representations of

selected manmade and natural features of a section

of the earth's surface plotted to a definite scale.

Records in the physical characteristics of terrain

as determined by precise engineering surveys and

measurements. Shows locations and shapes of

mountains, valleys, and plains; networks of streams

and rivers, and principal works of man. One can

located towns, houses, churches, and cemeteries on

these maps. Each 7.5' quadrangle has a scale of

              1:24,000 (1 inch = 2,000 feet), covers from 49 to

70 square miles, and is printed on 22 X 27 inch

              sheets.

YEARS PUBLISHED: 1949-

DESCRIPTION:
	Graphical representations of the bedrock,
surficial or engineering geology at the earth's surface.
Map units are superimposed upon topographical bases,
usually 7.5 minute or 15 minute quadrangles with scales of
1:240000 or 1:62500. Colors and patterns are used to
represent different rock or sedimentary units. The nature
and location of geologic structures, such as faults and folds,
is indicated on the map. Brief text describes the map
units, the criteria used to distinguish them and their
relative ages. Some maps also contain geologic cross-sections
and columnar sections.

USES:
Used primarily by geologists, geophysicists, and
other professional in the fields of earth and environmental
science -- typically in the fields of land-use planning,
assessment of geologic hazards, and minearl or oil
