of its holdings. Each inventory covers one of the 400
records groups (or an integral part of a records
group) to which the National Archive allocates its
holding. Each publication contains an introduction
to the subject of the inventoried series, followed
with brief summaries of each subject, document
types, dates, and other useful information listed
for each document. Also contains subject lists by
country and by title, lists by folder titles and by
microfilm numbers.
USES: Used as finding aids by National Archives staff for
efficient reference service; establishment of
administrative control over the records in the National
Archives; and to acquaint the public with the holdings of
the Archives.

addresses; economic messages; other formal
communications to Congress; the Presidents' new
conferences; Presidential addresses and informal
remarks; letters to Congressional leaders and heads
of federal agencies; "statements by the Presidents";
and public records of meetings with foreign leaders.
After 1977, includes full text of executive orders,
proclamations, announcements of appointments, and
nominations of administrative officials. Whenever
possible, the text is based on original sources.
Each volume contains a complete subject index.
Names of persons and places are listed
alphabetically together with analytical entries
covering the text of all items. A cumulative annual
index appears in the final volume of each year.
USES: Provides a uniform and systematic publication of
Presidential messages and papers, useful to anyone
researching a particular President.
