pedagogical methods. Topics include using a whole-
language approach; keeping LEP students in school;
using the sheltered-English vocabulary development
approach for mainstreaming; using computers; and
integrating language and content instruction. Each
booklet includes a bibliography.
USES: The primary audience for this material consists of
educators, linguists, and literacy and social workers
dealing with children with limited English proficiency.
These are hands-on, how-to explanations that could also be
of interest to non-LEP students and to any member of
the general public interested in literacy issues.

secondary, and higher educational levels as well as
special, continuing, and teacher education; most
booklets include a section on recent educational
developments. Supplements include tables and charts
which reveal enrollment, funding, graduation rate,
curriculum hours, and other statistics. A glossary
of education terms and a list of selected references
ends the discussion.
USES: Useful for background information for scholars of
comparative education or those interested in teaching or
studying abroad. Should be used in conjunction with more
current information because of the dated nature of these
materials.

USES: Useful to teachers of English as a Second Language
students (all grade levels), as it provides a theoretical
and argumentative framewoork for these course. Also
interesting to those studying the legal issues of bilingual
education.

the National Center for Education Statistics, providing

406 of the General Education Provisions Act. Key
data measure the health of education, monitor
important developments, and illustrate trends in
major areas of education.
This series has been published in three volumes
since 1988. Volume 1 addresses elementary and
secondary education while Volume 2 covers
postsecondary education. Text, tables, and charts
are incorporated into each volume. Indicators of
education in these volumes include: high school
dropout rates; college enrollment rates for recent
high school graduates; distribution of college
students by parents' education and income; ACT/SAT
scores; math and science performance; writing
performance; and student drug and alcohol abuse.
Volume 3 is published as Education Indicators, and
includes the text, tables, and graphs from the first
two volumes, supplementing them with supporting
data, technical information, and data sources.
USES: Presented for a general audience: useful for
educators, administrators, librarians, parents, and other
concerned citizens. Also a valuable source for journalists
and lawmakers needing to keep abreast of educational trends.

and legends taken from twelve different reservations.
Materials are arranged by reading levels. Levels 1
through 3 contain 20 booklets each; level 4 has 21
booklets and a teacher's manual; level 5 has 18
booklets and a teacher's manual; and level 6 has 1
book at a teacher's manual. Both the textbooks and
the teacher's manual have pen and ink illustrations
by Native American artists. Teacher's manuals
include summaries of each story, listings of
vocabulary words from the stories, and listed of
suggested class activities.
USES: Can be used by teachers to supplement language arts
and social studies curriculums. Also serves as an excellent
tool for teachers wishing to incorporate a Native American
culture into their classroom or for reinforcing a positive
self-image for young Native American students. Excellent
read-aloud stories for school librarians.
