DESCRIPTION: These 20-page booklets offer innovative and
practical classroom techniques and suggestions for
teaching bilingual and LEP (Limited English

pedagogical methods. Topics include using a whole-
  language approach; keeping LEP students in school;
  using the sheltered-English vocabulary development
approach for mainstreaming; using computers; and
integrating language and content instruction. Each
  booklet includes a bibliography.

educators, linguists, and literacy and social workers

These are hands-on, how-to explanations that could also be
of interest to non-LEP students and to any member of
the general public interested in literacy issues.

DESCRIPTION: Each booklet is a discussion of the education
system of a particular country. Issues are organized
around the stages of a nation's system, beginning
with the historical and legal information about the
country and its people; a map of the country usually
illustrates this section. Chapters are devoted to
the country's equivalent of preschool, primary,
secondary, and higher educational levels as well as
special, continuing, and teacher education; most
booklets include a section on recent educational
developments. Supplements include tables and charts
which reveal enrollment, funding, graduation rate,
curriculum hours, and other statistics. A glossary
of education terms and a list of selected references
  ends the discussion.

USES: Useful for background information for scholars of
comparative education or those interested in teaching or
studying abroad. Should be used in conjunction with more
current information because of the dated nature of these
  materials.

DESCRIPTION: A series of reports, gathered and published by
the National Center for Education Statistics, providing
statistics and other information on the condition
and progress of education, as required by section
406 of the General Education Provisions Act. Key
data measure the health of education, monitor
important developments, and illustrate trends in
  major areas of education.

This series has been published in three volumes
since 1988. Volume 1 addresses elementary and
secondary education while Volume 2 covers
postsecondary education. Text, tables, and charts
are incorporated into each volume. Indicators of
education in these volumes include: high school
dropout rates; college enrollment rates for recent
high school graduates; distribution of college
students by parents' education and income; ACT/SAT
scores; math and science performance; writing
performance; and student drug and alcohol abuse.
Volume 3 is published as Education Indicators, and
includes the text, tables, and graphs from the first
two volumes, supplementing them with supporting
data, technical information, and data sources.

USES: Presented for a general audience: useful for
educators, administrators, librarians, parents, and other
concerned citizens. Also a valuable source for journalists
and lawmakers needing to keep abreast of educational trends.
