under the Foreign Service Act of 1946 to provide training    
to government agency employees involved in foreign           
affairs.  This series is the Institute's primary          
textbook for language study and is designed to              
provide introductory learning materials for the              
English speaker. 
Course of study is divided into two sections:                
Programmed Instruction, which presents special               
features of the language and culture and a beginning         
vocabulary; and the Basic Course, which stresses             
conversation, grammar, and style.  These lessons             
incorporate more advanced vocabulary, dialogue,              
sentence structure, cultural notes, comprehension,           
and pronunciation. Many of these course can be               
ordered from F.S.I. with a manual, audio cassette,           
and workbook.  Over 33 languages are currently               
available for study. 

USES: A good introductory tool for anyone wishing to learn a 
particular foreign language.
